Review to come eventually, but what I’ll say now is wow the gender shifting was fascinating.

My rating for The Brilliant Death is hovering between three and four stars, and I may upgrade later. I found the world of the book really interesting and the descriptions of the landscape, food, and city of Amalia quite beautiful/compelling. Tea was an interesting character, but I also liked her family - excluding Beniamo of course. :) The story overall was good, but I think I would have liked more intrigue/time spent with Teo masquerading as Luca. Still, the resolution worked well and I liked the balance of the prologue and the epilogue.

The ending felt a little rushed or messy, and a little too open ended in my opinion. However, I LOVED SO MUCH OF THIS BOOK 😍😍 i loved how Any Rose Capetta decided to talk about the difference between men and women and their “places” and it just ugh, so good.

3/5 stars.

QUICK THOUGHTS:
• I hadn’t heard of this author before but she is co-author for an upcoming read I’m interested in, so I wanted to get an idea of her writing!
• This book was not great not bad. I thought that the plot was unique and I felt that there was some commentary on social structure that made it bigger than just the story being told.
• I didn’t really feel a connection to the main character. She was alright and discovered a lot of new things about herself along the way, which I was certainly surprised by!
• This has an element of gender-fluid rep, as well as some other LGBT rep. I thought that this part was done particularly well and I appreciated the way it was described.
• I read this via audio and I liked the narrator! I mainly started this because my app crashed while trying to listen to another book and just felt like I had to finish it.

Really cool & unique setting. We need more Italian mafia fantasy stories with non-binary mcs.
