Traumatic story with hopeful feelings at the end. Moral: you are not alone and change is possible.

Original and beautiful, a truly heart wrenching exploration of the life of someone who has achieved a lot, but had to come from hell to do so (picking up some distorted habits and thoughts along the way). Some elements were just a little too much for me, but I wasn’t nearly as put off as I would have expected if you had told me about it before.

I'm quite conflicted about the book. The ending was less empowering than I thought it would be and I'm not sure what that makes of the whole read. I sat through boring expositions of clothes and didn't get the pay-off I was expecting; that sittings.

However, I picked this book up because it was written in Creole. In that sense, the book provided an interesting challenge in making sense of the grammar and unfamiliar slang. For that experience I would recommend this book. However, heed the warnings for some very heavy subject matter.
