Thai was a book for class and I just didn’t have time to finish it on time. Nothing about the book itself and it’s content.

I just could not get into this— I tried! I got 45% through the audio and my mind kept wandering.
This book was so good! So good in fact, that I finished it in a day (which hardly ever happens). This is a sweet coming-of-age story that explores themes of family, grief, identity, change and ancestral trauma but uses Korean folklore to weave a very unique tale.
Of all the stories told to/by us, the most important one is the one we choose to tell about ourselves.

This book was not what I was expecting. And that is not the books fault. It took me too long to finish because I really wanted it to be a fantasy novel along the lines of Rick Riordan. But that is not what this is and the dissonance between my expectations and the book itself made it hard to get through. This is really a book about stories and families and grief. There are fantastical elements but I wouldn’t classify this as fantasy. It is lovely and the relationship between the girls and their halmoni really resonated with me.
Well this was just a beautiful and delightful read about the stories we tell ourselves and the stories we tell about ourselves. It’s also about two sisters and the sick grandmother and memories with just enough magic that it wasn’t over the top.
I felt sad, and loved, and confused, and brave, and silly, and embarrassed right along side Lily through this whole book.
As with many of the Newbery Award winners, this was not an easy, light hearted read, but it was a necessary one.
Tae Keller wove her tale beautifully and made it easy for readers understand how it feels to be an outsider, with a story to tell.
Just beautiful!
