I love Zachary Levi. The strength and vulnerability it took for him to share this dark part of his life makes him all the more admirable.

I could not love this book more. The eloquence. The vulnerability. The wit. It is the perfect memoir that perfectly captures depression and the effects of childhood relationships on personality development. I couldn’t put it down. It is a beautiful thing to see the true essence of the human experience on paper.

As a huge fan of Zachary Levi’s work (his acting and his other endeavors - Nerd HQ especially) I was heartbroken to hear of the struggles he endured as a child and the mental health issues he’s faced as a result of that trauma. Please don’t go into this thinking “poor rich white man” because money cannot buy you out of depression and self-doubt. I read this at a time when I have been dealing with my own depression, and I think it actually helped me to see that someone I viewed as so successful and inspiring can have self esteem issues too. I appreciated Zac’s candor about mental health being a constant work in progress - he acknowledges that he has relapses and will maybe never be completely healed - but wish he had a better attitude toward meds. He acknowledges that sometimes they are necessary but expresses a hope that he will not need them forever. Some people need meds forever and that’s okay. Zac also discusses his faith and the relationship between his faith and his mental health, but it doesn’t come across as preachy.

I was hoping for a fun look at Zachary Levi’s career, as Chuck is one of my all time favorites. That is not what this book is.
I didn’t realize that: 1. He struggled with so much trauma and mental health issues. 2. He is super religious. 3. This book would not talk about his acting career at all.
I found this book to be scattered, repetitive and preachy.

Listened to on audio, read by the author.

Really raw, really helpful in understanding trauma - what it is, who to “blame”, how to heal and move on.

Recommended for everyone.

An interesting mix of memoir and exploration of mental health issues. It was worth listening to the audiobook as it's read by Levi. You can hear a lot of emotion in his voice as he describes family trauma he lived through and how it all affected him later in life. This is a book that really drives home the fact that you never know what battles other people are fighting. Even if you don't suffer from anxiety or depression, hearing Levi's journey provides a lot of insight.

The is now my favorite autobiography! It’s also definitely one of the top books I’ve read so far this year. I could relate to Zachary’s story so much! This was such an inspiring book. I love how he wrote it and how is aim was to help shed light on mental health struggles and how our family of origin can play a huge role in who we are as people. There is a huge difference between trying to “fix” yourself and healing. I will be listening/reading this book again! I highly recommend it.

This is a really lovely memoir about mental health and generational trauma. I picked it up because I'm a fan of the TV show Chuck and went in with no expectations. Zachary Levi talks about his struggles and faith with humility, and I appreciated his vulnerability. He's doing a lot of good work to destigmatize getting help for mental illness.
