Not only does Zachary Levi have a fantastic voice, but he also shares his journey with mental health—and what a wonderful gift! I really appreciated it. So much of what he wrote resonated with me and my own experience. Maybe we should all learn more radical love, see our parents as humans with their own stories, and forgive others rather than wallow in anger, resentment, or self-pity.
Picked this up because I like Zachary Levi as an actor, but as a celebrity-written book, I had really low expectations. I was pleasantly surprised. It’s interesting to read about his experiences and his faith.

I am in a season of my life where I am struggling with bad programming and I'm in a deep dive of trauma healing books because I am trying to believe that I have value - fun light things like that and I was delighted to find out that the lead actor of the show that saved my life in 2009 wrote a book about going through a very relatable time. Maybe 2009 me knew why I was so dedicated to #SaveChuck - it is interesting to think about.

4.5 I’m going to start this review by saying that I’m 100% the target audience for this book. I’m a fan of Zachary Levi’s work with some connection to the industry and have family members who struggle with mental health. On top of that I’m also a person of faith. All those things combine to make me the ideal reader for this book. Levi’s struggles are so relatable, it’s easy to feel a connection with him right away. He comes across as open and honest about his struggles, and the reasons he was struggling in the first place. In the book he talks about what he’s actively doing to combat his mental illness and in that way is doing his part to open the conversation and try to break through the stigmas often associated with being mentally unwell (and taking medication for it). This book is also told from a very Christian perspective. As a person of faith, I think it’s important to recognize how that faith influences our outlook on life, and Levi’s faith is clearly a huge part of his journey. However, if talk of religion and/or God and/or prayer makes you uncomfortable then this book will make you uncomfortable A LOT.
I think it is important to know going into this book that Levi is NOT a mental health professional, trying to give you a step by step guide to dealing with your trauma. This book is about him individually: what he is battling, what is working for him, what he believes (what he has come to understand through therapy) is one way forward, and his encouragement for others who may also be struggling. He is an advocate for everyone to get the help they need, and to be open to talking about it, so that we as a community can come together to help and love each other (and ourselves).

This was a great memoir. An unflinching look at the life experiences that factored into his struggles with anxiety and depression and the things he did to address them. I was a little concerned when he started talking about his faith in God, but it never felt preachy or pushy. Overall, the memoir is a realistic, yet hopeful look at a tough mental health struggle and the journey to healing.
