I’ve been reading Sheffield’s articles for years so it was interesting to read something longer from him. I do think there could have been some more in depth research and information on pop music history. I liked how he discussed the albums chronologically and the re-recordings but felt like this was really an opportunity to discuss statistics, data, and the impact of social media on pop music as it’s evolved. I also think it would have been nice to explore her relationship with her fans over time instead of her relationships (romantic and platonic) with other celebrities. As a long time Taylor Swift fan, most of this was information I already knew but still enjoyed the read overall.

This book was not what I was expecting which definitely impacted my enjoyment of it. I was expecting more of a sociological examination of pop music and Taylor Swift, and while some of that is present in the book, this is mainly a series of essays about Taylor Swift's lyrics. The author self-identifies as a Taylor Swift fan (and has had a lot of encounters with her) which I think makes the argument of the subtitle even less convincing. This book did accomplish making me want to listen to more Taylor Swift, including some albums which I have never been interested in listening to.
