My favorite element of The Dry was Falk's emotional depth and connections with other characters. Granted, that origin-story book was connected to him personally, which makes that easier. However, I found it really lacking in this book. I'm not sure what the actual breakdown is but I felt like I spent more time with the narration of the women than with Falk's investigation and I spent a lot of it thinking 'okay but can we go back to Falk?' Ultimately I didn't connect emotionally with the story, but the mystery itself was good and the sense of place and setting was just as good as it was in the first book.

Would the employees really be left on their own to hike through a desolate and remote forest? It seems like they would have had some training or had someone from the travel company hike with them. Shouldn't they have known there was no cell phone reception and had supplies (like a flare?) in case of danger? I liked reading this book but didn't much care for any of the characters.

The mystery was interesting enough, but I almost stopped listening to the audiobook because the set up is so unrealistic. An outdoor adventure company sends small groups of inexperienced hikers on 3-night backpacking trips, with only ONE paper map, ONE compass, and ONE of the hikers barely trained to use them per group. And no emergency devices or other back-up! Who could get insurance for this? The author really could have worked a little harder to come up with reasons for the women getting cut off from help. I also would have enjoyed more detailed descriptions of the landscape that the women struggle through; I never got a clear picture of the setting. Maybe this is because none of the characters seemed very interested in trying to understand or even observe the wilderness that they were lost in.

I was really surprised by the twist. I read the series out of order but I didn’t feel like I was playing catch up. I loved the survival part mixed in with the crime thriller part. This really surprised me
