This time we've left the drought-stricken outback for the challenging terrain of the Giralang Ranges. The set-up is a bit gimmicky, and the ending brings out too many personal issues that we didn't know about beforehand, but I enjoyed spending time with Falk again.

Really enjoyed this book. Good mystery with many twists.

What a good book! Detective Aaron Falk is back with his partner, in Australia, investigating a white collar crime when he hears that his informant is missing in the Australian bushland. She went on a work retreat hike in the outback and didn't return.

The book was so good! I could not put it down and I enjoyed the way the story was told from different points of view, snapshots from the women in the wilderness--the survival and the infighting, then switching to the investigation. Vivid descriptions of Australia and how dangerous it can be. The characters were developed well and really jumped off the page.

The second book in the Falk series isn’t quite as initially engaging to me as the first was, but it didn’t take too long for me to get into it. The dry, rural vibe of the first one was what drew me in so I had to adapt to the new setting of this one, but I’m already too invested in the Falkverse to care. The actual plot of the book is something I can’t tell if I enjoyed as much as the Hadler murders, I was mildly annoyed in the moment at the constant perspective shifts since I just wanted to continue on with the side of the story I was reading. In hindsight I liked the choice to tell the story in this cut up, fragmented way, as if haltingly regaining the memory of what  actually happened during those faithful few days out on the mountain.

It still didn’t quite reach the level of Harper’s debut novel, but if you’re a fan it’s still a fun ride. It’s missing some excitement since the storytelling leaves a lot of the actual detective work out of our mystery. It slowly– thankfully, that way it still manages to makes it feel like a building mystery– throughout the book just shows you what happened, while Falk and his partner don’t make much progress with their own investigation until the end.

It was a fine book, easy to get through just as with the first one. Looking forward to starting book three.

Solid, I quite like Jane Harper’s writing and Aaron Faulk
I loved the setting in this book and just a good aussie read set in the bush. I wasn’t as engaged as I was in the dry because none of the characters were particularly likeable and Faulk and Carmen were very much a sub-plot. I was interested throughout and bunged the last 1/4. I didn’t like that the ended was kind of accidental/perpetrators were unaware because I felt that it lightened it in a way? I guess I was looking forward to a juicier and more confrontational end rather than old beef/protective parents. I still quite enjoyed this so I’d give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️:)

Solid mystery. I really like this series and Aaron.
