Not as good as ‘The Dry’, but still a solid Mystery.
Aaron Falk was just as interesting and enjoyable as he was in the first book, and I would definitely love to read more stories featuring him. Just like in ‘The Dry’ I love how the author used the weather (this time the cold) to convey fear, urgency, and isolation. I also liked how the novel switched between the present and the days leading up to Alice’s disappearance, and that in the flashbacks the POV alternated between the four women who were on the work team-building bush excursion with Alice. I thought it was a good way to get to know the characters, their backstories, and how they felt about Alice, and they were all likeable people who you felt for. I enjoyed how the story was part adventure.
I gave this one four stars, as the mystery wasn’t as multi-layered as I would have liked, and the plot was slow-moving in places. There were also a couple of unanswered questions, that I felt needed to be addressed, although they might be intended for future plots. Definitely worth a read, and I can’t wait to read more by Jane Harper.

Another great mystery with Falk, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. A little unexpected again, but a good ending nevertheless.
Moderate: Violence
Minor: Miscarriage, Abortion

I enjoyed this book. I left off the 4th star because it just missed the mark in a couple ways.
Jane Harper has definitely proven that she’s no one trick pony when it comes to this genre. I had high hopes after The Dry and she painted a really atmospheric landscape. The psychological tricks the bush played on those women really radiated through the pages and had me on edge.
This is the reason I can forgive a somewhat anticlimactic ending. Because the journey to get there was just so fun. While some found faults in the ending I found it to be very real.
The dialogue was a little lackluster compared to The Dry and the character development felt sort of non-existent (looking at you Carmen. Why do you even exist in this story anyway?) but I think the premise is important to remember in this instance. The women are become LESS developed and more feral with every page and with every night they are trapped in the wilderness.
Over all I enjoyed this book and read it very fast because it was the perfect pace and an extremely atmospheric setting that Harper really brings to life. It’s not perfect but not a waste of time either.
