What. A. Story. This book devastated me multiple times and the story was harrowing. I will be thinking about this book for a long time.

Historical fiction is not typically my go-to (I’m primarily a romance reader).

However a few months ago I picked by the Women by Kristin Hannah and I loved it. I knew I had to read more by her.

This is the heartbreaking story of two sisters (Vianne and Isabelle). This takes place primarily in France between 1939 and 1945 although there are scenes from 1995 and you don’t really know who these scenes are about until the end of the book.

Vianne and Isabelle are so different from one another but have a strong sibling bond that gets put to the limit so many times.

At the start of the war Vianne’s husband is sent to fight and Vianne is left with her young daughter and is trying to do anything to survive.

Isabelle is 18 and wants nothing more than to make an impact in the war. She grows so much as a character throughout the book.

The last 25% of the book I was completely engrossed and needed to know what was going to happen. I cried multiple times.

If you like historical fiction you should definitely pick this book up.
