Unfortunately, it lost its magic towards the end. Whilst I am all for a discussion of male violence towards women, it has become such a common and recurrent theme in Jackson's work that at times it feels anticlimactic if you have also enjoyed her other books, as I have. The ending felt like a case of 'telling rather than showing' in its description of Bel's desire to stand by her new family, and Carter's willingness to completely cut Sherry out of her life felt ingenuous to the character and unbelievable.
I wanted to love this book (and initially thought I would), but I think it will be a while before I pick up another novel by this author.
The ending of this book was so crazy. I liked this book, it was entertaining but I didn’t LOVE like I did the AGGTM series. The first 200 pages were not the best, but the pace gets picked up after. It’s a good thriller & a nice read.
[4/5 ★★★★☆]“Her disappearance was like a puzzle, and it’s human nature to want to solve a puzzle.”
