Chloe Sampson's life was put on hold when her mother suddenly abandoned her younger siblings. Chloe had to drop out of school, return to her hometown, and work in the local library to support her brothers and sister. Although this occurred years ago, life has been a continual struggle, both financially and emotionally, until Chloe finds a rare old book that she hopes to sell online. Unfortunately, the book's margins contain written conversations between a man and a woman--engaging and challenging conversations that also indicate the two participants were lovers. As Chloe reads the conversations, she hopes the additional writing will not decrease the value of the book, but also finds she is charmed by these unknown people and wants to know more. Thus begins her search for other books with additional conversations and clues--a search that transforms her life and the lives of her siblings.

EEEEEK. After reading the Lonely Hearts Book Club and I Hate You More earlier this year, I was super excited for this one. I actually would say that of Lucy Gilmore's books, this one is my favorite. This follows Chloe, a librarian struggling to make ends meet while being the primary guardian for her 3 younger siblings. One day she finds a copy of Tropic of Cancer, a book that was pulled from the shelves of all libraries and bookstores due to its contents, and there are notes inside between 2 individuals. Unbeknownst to her, one of the individuals is her curmudgeon next door neighbor Jasper who I came to love very quickly and she ventures to find these two people.
I absolutely love the story line, the shifts in perspective, the characters and the then/now perspectives. I cannot wait to see what Gilmore puts out next.

I enjoyed the first half a lot more than the second half. I also wanted the romances to be stronger. It ended up feeling fairly hollow, with the exception of the familial/platonic relationships. The focus of the book was really torn between the two and ended up lacking depth overall. Also I'm sorry some people did not have enough consequences for their actions in this world.
