It was awesome! I couldn't put it down.
the ending was really sad tho :(
4.5 because of a lot of səxual content and five trillion lgbtq characters

maybe 4.7? not quite perfy, but oh so enjoyable!! the whole story starts when addie is 23 in the late 1700's and doesn't want to be forced into marriage with some older dude who already has kids. so she makes a deal with the devil, who takes the form of her dream hunny that she had been drawing for ages. (it's funny to think that back then people basically had to draw their own porn). she says she wants to be "free", which Luc (who i was pronouncing as loos as in short for Lucifer) savagely interprets to mean that no one will remember her as soon as she is out of their sight. this is obvs pretty brutal and lonely, esp at first. her own family doesn't remember her, she cant hold a job or a permanent place to live, she can't even draw/write anything. she has to resort to prostitution early on, and i honestly found it refreshing how she was almost casual about it all. she just did the needful so she could buy some food and moved on.

she also played muse to a variety of artists in diff ways. there was a great thought throughout about how ideas are better than memories, they take root and last longer.

luc would come visit, usually on their "anniversary". their complex and changing relationship was of course the most interesting part about the book. schwab sure does know how to write a brooding (poss evil) hunny to carry her books <3. i really enjoyed it when they had their 30+ year affair of sorts, though it seemed like it sort of blew up when he made a comment that she interpreted as him indicating that he had been playing her the whole time and didn't really love her and was still just trying to get her to surrender her soul. but she wasn't even sure! so it seemed odd to call it all off and not see each other for ~40 yrs. i was expecting that she would morally take issue with him taking ppl's souls, but interestingly enough that didn't seem to be the option. i wish the book had shed more light on if she truly loved him? independent of how she thought he might feel about her, i wanted more clarity on how she truly felt about him. i loved it when he would push back on her about how neither of them were human, and how that should cause them to question what it means to "love" someone. i would have liked it to go even further, what is love for a devil that has no souls? and what does he do with other people's souls?!

the love story with henry didn't quite have the heat as some of her other interactions. it did seem at first that they were mostly stoked that the other person was immune from their respective curses. but is that enough? it seemed like maybe it was, but then after henry came clean and they had that last glorious day where they went out to rockport beach, she kept questioning to herself if it was really love or simply good enough. which to be fair, is a pretty human question to ask.

i liked the end, where she (at least thinks) has tricked luc. she convinces him to release henry from their deal, if she will agree to be his as long as he wants her. though i do wonder what it means to "be his", seems like they are spending time together? she seems to think she can break his heart/make him not want to be with her anymore, and then she'll be "free", but idk. i feel like he would see through that, and maybe even like her more for trying? would love to have had chapter from his POV. the ones from henry's POV def helped flesh him out as a character.

Tränen kullerten 🥲🫶 mehr muss nicht gesagt werden.
