This is a book to give you hope, even as it is bittersweet wishing that history had in fact gone the way it does in this book. It starts out a bit slow, but the characters are interesting enough to hold attention. Once the action kicks off, though, the pace is thrilling and the events vindicating. They even kill Andrew Jackson !! Also James invents gumbo! Two of the main characters are trans! The writing is clear and direct in a way that I often find comes from writers of mainly nonfiction, and that I think was well suited to the counterfactual genre. Fiction holds a critical place in any revolution, and this book is, I believe, and excellent additon to that canon.
Graphic: Child death, Gun violence, Racism, Slavery, Violence, Grief, Colonisation, War, and Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Death, Gore, Rape, Suicide, Blood, and Death of parent
Minor: Deadnaming, Genocide, and Pregnancy
I'm not sure if the deadnaming can be accurately called that due to my lack of knowledge about gender and language in Muskogee society. Also, two trans characters are referred to using their previous names and pronouns while giving their backstories.donutlookaway's review
