It took a while to get into this one but I'm excited for the rest of the series. The world building took time to become familiar with for me.

Just couldn’t get into it.

An absolute zero. I knew this was going to be a hate read ten minutes into the cringey "research atmosphere" and the "scientific intrigue". It didn't get better. The standard Messiah of the people, young, male, and smart, but not too smart (not too much education either, can't have that gumming up the place). Gary sue levels of charm, bringing together sycophancy with enough young male energy (ala James Bond) to get an elderly researcher (F), a swarm of bots (?) and a dead young girl (F) to be madly in love with him....

I could go on but it's too annoying to even satirically remember. An author for the blacklist for sure.

--- I always forget how bad most sci-fi is. It's a genre almost always only OK in my recollection..

Eh. This was too long, and too sci-fi for me. I don’t read actual sci-fi very often and when I do, it’s more like The Martian and Project Hail Mary, but I loved The Expanse tv show and this book dude I love LOVES the expanse books, so I gave this a shot. Maybe I should have given the expanse books a shot instead. Duh. This is just occurring to me. Anyway! This had aliens that look like bugs, which I don’t like, and some sort of swarm ai type thing (I think it was ai? Maybe not? But some sort of hive mind) which I am sick of after those Pandominion books. Plus most of these characters were assholes. So do I recommend this? Only if you like bug alien sci-fi. Will I read the next one? Probably not. But I will google it to find out what happens bc it’s a pretty fun story. Now for the Thursday Murder book that’s not Thursday Murder!!! I am sooooo excited!! #engelbrechtreads2024 #engelbrechtreads

Not as thrilling of a start as the Expanse, but interesting enough to continue the series.
