Tears are still streaming down my face as I write this.
To be clear, I knew exactly what I was getting myself into by choosing to read this third. But I still was not prepared for the emotional devastation of the last novella. The first couple novellas were a little bit slower for me, although I did enjoy them and flew through them at a good pace. But I was more hooked once Celaena went to the Red Desert and then it was all uphill from there. Or should I say downhill, since each page brought me closer to Sam's fate?
The only other thing I'll say is that I'm very glad I decided to read this third. I liked the intrigue of Celaena's backstory in Throne of Glass, and then in this book everything about who she was before is spread wide open. I'm glad I had the chance to fall in love with her as a character first, before I learned all these details about her past. I don't think I would have been nearly as invested in these stories if I read them first. It was so good to learn even more about her character and what events shaped the way she views the world now, and I'm excited to go into Heir of Fire with that added context now.

Read as book 4. I had seen somewhere that reading this book as 4 in the series was the "emotionally devastating" reading order. I have to say I agree. I was gutted. I'm so glad to have this history, really adds to everything else.
