I was recommended to read this book after Heir of Fire, and I stand by that. I loved learning the backstory. I feel like I would have been spoiled on a lot of things if I had read this first. Enjoyed this book, but I’m excited to return to the current events in the series!

This felt like an anthology capturing critical moments in Celaena's early life, memories that she teases in the first two books, particularly her haunting relationship with Sam and how she came to be in Endovier. For those who were slightly turned off by her arrogant personality in the first two books (me!), this prequel helps understand her character and choices a little bit better. A lot of character development is shown in this book, mainly demonstrating where Celaena's "strike now ask questions later" attitude stems from, but we also witness her learning to apply empathy; not seeing mercy as a sign of weakness, but a virtue of strength. While I enjoyed this book more than the first two, it was a little bit predictable and not that engaging to me.
