Use of Weapons

This book probably has some of the most interesting characters and story arcs in the series so far, and is one of those books that I feel like I should re-read at some point to catch all the clues and hints leading up to the finale. The author also does a great job of tying the themes into the story in a really interesting, layered way.

The story is presented in two arcs, one happening in reverse chronological order and exploring the main character's past, while the other follows the present. The former was really well done and interesting to read, but I thought the present timeline one had some weak pacing and felt aimless at times.

That said, on the whole I still recommend it!

I want to like this book so much, as the culture series has a fascinating world and it's got really interesting ideas about AI. But this book was unbelievably hard to get through!

An incoherent mess of a story, an unremarkable cast of characters for which I felt nothing, a plottwist that only left me thinking: wait, if this is the twist, then what was the plot?

And not to mention the fact that "use of weapons" was used as a phrase in laughable moments about 20 times.. I honestly don't understand why this book has got such good reviews. I'm glad I finally struggled through it and can now read a different book.

This is sort of a quiet book of one person’s discovery and ends extremely well.
