I enjoy the Krewe of Hunters novels, though they require me to take my analysis hat off. This one was a fun story set in a ghost town struggling to survive in modern times, so there was plenty of Old West flair. There's a skull found deep in the backstage depths of an old-time theater, so we get to see Jane and her artistic talents on display. The author cares about her characters enough to make sure that we know they really do have the skills they talk about. It was nice to see a softer side of the Krewe with Jane. Of course there is some conflict between the main characters (this wouldn't be a Harlequin mystery without it) and of course they fall wildly in love and they solve the crime(s) together. I didn't really expect the bad guy here, so the ending was a little flat for me. The climactic action comes in one big bunch at the end, but the rest of the story is a good paranormal mystery, with Jane receiving help from the town's resident ghosts (yep, it really is a ghost town!). The Krewe novels don't need to be read in order, so if you're in the mood for a little romantic ghost-story murder mystery, pick this up.

Received as a digital ARC via Netgalley and the publisher.

4 stars despite the flaws, because the setting is so much fun. Review to come.

4! Okay...Just when I thought I was incorrect in the assumption, a third Krewe could exist!!! Seriously? Why? I realize these are acts of fiction BUT I like to have a bit of reality thrown in...3 Krewes of 6...overkill much? YET...I am absolutely loving these stories otherwise! I love the past meeting up with the present in the form of murder and mayhem...Who Doesn't?

The Night is Watching by Heather Graham is a crime mystery spanning the past and present in a type of old west setting complete with ghostly apparitions. The past "who robbed the stage coach carrying the gold" issue bleeds into present day as the gold still seems to be on everybody's minds. What would an old west town, or even crime scenes, be without a little disembodied presences? You won't have to worry because they are there too. It kept the book on the lighter side. The Night is Watching was entertaining and humorous...a good read.

Warnng: Spoilers

Sloan Trent has returned to his hometown of Lily to become it's Sheriff. When a skull turns up on a shelf in the local theater, he reaches out to his old friend, who is now a leader with the FBI's elite, and special, Krewe of Hunters. Jane Everett, the team's forensic artist, arrives in town to help identify the skull.

More bones are found, some of them new. There is modern menace and an old mystery. As always, our couple is immediately attracted to each other and within a week, know that they are worth completely changing their lives for each other.

Ultimately, when the mystery is solved, it's more like who didn't do it. It was a little irritating and an over-the top conspiracy.

I have always loved Heather Graham, but the formula on these Krewe books is getting a little too exact without enough to make the characters spark. I have faith that it will get better.

The story was good! But difficult to read! Probably because the author uses punctuation, specifically the exclamation point, as badly as I am here! (I am not exaggerating!) Difficult to enjoy a story when the punctuation is so bad it distracts from the story! A shame as it was an interesting plot and the characters had potential!

Well that was quite a pleasant surprise! This was a slightly complicated one and what cracks me up
is that there were so many people involved that I was basically right about all my guesses!
(and that IS a big spoiler, so) Maybe it's just me, but I felt like there was a hint of Agatha Christie in this one. I think it's the small town thing. But it was a super fun read. Recommend.

Great mystery with a little bit of the paranormal and a romance thrown in for good measure. Lots of twists & turns in a believable story that kept me guessing right up until the very end. While I had guessed correctly at who the bad guys were (though only in the last 20-30 pages or so), I had no idea where the hidden gold was until I was told. Nice. Plus, when I got this book in my Harlequin shipment, I was dismayed to see that it was part of a series of which I had not read the others, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it read well as a standalone novel. Doubly nice.

I have read a majority of the titles in this series, and I have to say, I like this one the second best! Heart of Evil, the first in the series, remains my favorite. However, I really liked this one!

This book takes place in Arizona, in a town similar to Tombstone, an old west ghost town. This is not a setting where I usually read - I enjoyed the change up! But who couldn't love a book with cowboys, gold, a history of wild west shootouts, and outlaws?

The Night is Watching is a fun, entertaining book, with some crazy plot twists! I had no idea who the culprits were. I was just as shocked at finding out whodunit as I was when I was a little girl watching Scooby Doo, and they pulled the mask off the bad guy.

This is definitely a book to pick up if you are looking for a quick read and a mystery with an ending you didn't see coming; a book to read on a sunny day with storm clouds gathering in the distance.
