Ok, well, I didn't love this much. Pippi is the type of character that I've never enjoyed. I've never been a big fan of the free spirited, doesn't understand the rules, wild child, type of kid. I'm glad I read this as it is a classic and so many people's favorite book from their childhood but for me, a forever type-A, anxious rule following gal, it wasn't my type of story.

I probably would have loved Pippi Longstocking as a child, but as an adult I am less than enthusiastic about her. Lindgren did a great job of encapsulating everything children wish they could be in one small girl. She is strong, doesn't go to school, lives with a monkey and a horse, outsmarts adults, and mostly gets away with misbehaving.

+:
- Grappig
- Laagdrempelig

Characters: 9/10
I found the characters in Pippi Longstocking to be wonderfully memorable and utterly distinctive. Pippi herself is a whirlwind of charm and eccentricity, with her wild imagination, unmatched independence, and unpredictable antics. She felt like a character who leaps off the page, fully formed, and impossible to forget. Tommy and Annika, while less vibrant, added depth to the story as the perfect counterbalance to Pippi’s chaos, grounding the narrative in a relatable perspective. Even minor characters, like the townsfolk or the skeptical adults, contributed to the story’s charm. I could describe Pippi’s personality easily, and I cared deeply about her adventures and her unorthodox approach to life.
Atmosphere/Setting: 8/10
The world of Pippi Longstocking was immersive in its whimsical, slightly surreal charm. I vividly pictured the quirky Villa Villekulla, with its colorful oddities and the sense of freedom it represented. The scenes brimmed with energy, from Pippi’s hilarious encounters with authority figures to her offbeat adventures. The atmosphere was lighthearted and playful, effectively enhancing the story's humor and wonder. While the setting wasn’t deeply detailed, it was perfectly suited to the whimsical tone of the narrative, making it an enjoyable backdrop for the story.
Writing Style: 9/10
Astrid Lindgren’s writing style felt timeless, engaging, and brimming with wit. The prose was simple yet rich, capturing the innocence and imagination of childhood while weaving in humor that felt fresh and clever. The balance between dialogue and narration worked seamlessly, with Pippi’s eccentricities shining through every line she spoke. The writing flowed effortlessly, and I appreciated how Lindgren’s voice seemed to respect the intelligence and curiosity of her audience. I would eagerly explore more of her works, as her style felt genuinely unique and entertaining.
Plot: 8/10
The episodic structure of the plot felt well-suited to the book’s tone and Pippi’s character. While there wasn’t a single overarching narrative, each chapter delivered its own satisfying mini-adventure, from Pippi outwitting adults to her whimsical observations about the world. The pacing was steady and appropriate, with no section feeling particularly slow or unnecessary. The story was cohesive despite its episodic nature, and while it lacked dramatic twists, its charm lay in its unpredictability. I felt that it ended on a note that left me both satisfied and wishing for more time with Pippi.
Intrigue: 9/10
I was consistently eager to return to the book and follow Pippi’s adventures. The unpredictability of her actions and the humor woven into her interactions kept me fully invested. I found myself curious about what creative scenario Lindgren would conjure next, and that sense of wonder persisted from start to finish. I never felt disengaged, as Pippi’s personality and antics kept the story alive and compelling throughout.
Logic/Relationships: 7/10
While the book embraced a whimsical and fantastical tone, the relationships and character dynamics still felt authentic and heartfelt. Pippi’s bond with Tommy and Annika was endearing, and I believed in their admiration for her adventurous spirit. The rules of the world were loosely defined, which suited the story’s tone but occasionally made events feel untethered from reality. However, this was more of a feature than a flaw, as the lack of strict logic contributed to the book’s charm. The relationships, motives, and behaviors fit seamlessly into the lighthearted, almost dreamlike world Lindgren created.
Enjoyment: 10/10
I thoroughly enjoyed Pippi Longstocking. It was a delightful, imaginative, and heartwarming read that left me smiling and wanting more. The humor, charm, and unique perspective made it an unforgettable experience. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone seeking a whimsical escape, regardless of age, as its wit and creativity are universally appealing.
