Little conflicted when it came to rating the book. 3 starts felt too less and 4 stars didn't reflect how much I loved the book either. It took me some time to get used to the unusual style of writing (lack of punctuation bothered me a lot in the beginning) but got used to it. Loved the diverse characters and themes handled in the book but did not have the same impact on me as Homegoing did. Definitely do not regret reading it though! :)

I read this book in its polish translation and I must congratulate the translator, Aga Zano, for doing the impossible and bringing such vibrant, strong and unique characters to life in a completely different language than the original, without losing all their little quirks, accents and regionalisms. Linguistically it must have been a great challenge and it was really beautifully done. The story itself was an amazing intersection of female voices, I loved how each person was somehow connected to the others, creating this beautiful web of women's stories.

In this stunning book, readers get to take a deep dive into the lives of typically marginalized characters. Evaristo manages to fill the narrative with profound intimacy despite the vast scope. Really amazing.

This book explored some interesting themes, but executed most of them in a lacklustre way. It was a challenge to read but I do appreciate it because, to quote one of the characters, “[Good stories] are about expanding our understanding of what it means to be human”.
