Neverender’s story feels disjointed. According to Kraft’s Kickstarter, the plot is about “an earthborn punk and his journey into a space dueling ring.” Without that summary, I would have a hard time seeing how the gladiators and the boy are connected. While this is the first issue, a little more foreshadowing would be nice. Some other details did not add up. Corruption certainly plays a role in explaining some things, but suspension of disbelief only goes so far. Worldbuilding is confined to incidents revolving around Merrick or duels. Perhaps a look into other areas of the planet would allow readers to reconcile these ideas.

The threads of the story are all there, but as a reader, I had a hard time putting them together. Some of the fight sequences are hard to follow because of the colorless art style, similar to manga. Background characters are interesting but can be described as part of the setting. Major characters are shallow and difficult to like. Merrick’s story can be an interesting one with added characters and solid worldbuilding. However, this first issue feels almost like a draft for something better.
