A very interesting book (historical novel) that brings us in the last decades of the Austo-Hungarian Empire. Interesting times, during which modernity and an historical "feeling of the Empire" coexisted. The story takes place throughout the lives of three members of the Trotta family (grandfather, father and son), which obtains its noble title (thus becoming "von Trotta") thanks to the grandfather, who saves Kaiser Franz Joseph at the battle of Solferino. From that point on, the paths of the family and of the Empire will be intertwined.

Prachtig, beklemmend, menselijk, tragisch.

Every bit as good as promised. Yes it is a story of a society in decline, of an empire in decline, and of a family which reflects that decline. The Kaiser occasionally appears showing that the Trottas are not alone in their lack of any kind of grip on modernism and change.
The language can be wonderful. Roth's use of metaphor and description greatly deepens the structure of the novel and its development.

Events got in the way. It’s beautifully written

Not capturing my attention right now.
