"She gazed at the wide-open fangs of the snake surrounding the mirror, and she turned her face and rested on his shoulder, she dark and he pale, making an odd contrast amidst all the snowy-white sheets, like a vignette, the darkness of the house blurring the border."

The story's an interesting blend of classic Gothic elements, tangible suspense, some TRIPPY sci-fi, and slow-burn romance that surprisingly made me I invested.

I like:
- The setting. 1950s Mexico and Goth Victorian vibes, as well as the dilapidated small town feels with a hint of Spanish bits that gave a personally familiar sense.

- The slow pacing that gradually creeps you up. Calculated clues meant for good foreshadowing.

-The social commentaries about colonialism, eugenics, and gender.

Also, this book gave me back my fondness for the Gothic genre!

This book is one giant fever dream. Overall, the dialogue was awful and some of the characters were a little flat, but I have to hand it to Moreno-Garcia for writing one the weirdest and most unique books I've ever read, hard to put down.
