I put off reading this despite everyone raving about it because I’m stubborn and now I’m ANGRY WITH MYSELF, because there’s a reason this book is so popular!

I have nothing bad to say about it. This was a decadent sort of unsettling that had me guessing right up to the very end. I had such a blast reading it.

This was a book club read. This book has very intense content; it is not for everyone. In general, horror is not my go-to genre. If you are a Gothic horror fan this may be your cup of tea it just wasn't mine.

What I did like:
-Some of the characters - Catalina, Francis & Noemi.
-The cover is beautiful.
-There is a very well written "Gothic" feel/vibe.

This style of horror was very gruesome, graphic and trigger-warning heavy. This book was slow the first 65%/70%; it's a very dark story and definitely gives a Gothic "trapped" feeling. Nightmares, manipulation, gas-lighting, gruesomeness, evil characters, horrible acts done against people.

Triggers: cannibalism, incest, being buried alive, sexual violence; and the gaslighting in this book is so stressful.

I rescued this book, along with Dry and Indian No More from the trash room at my apartment complex. They deserved a better home. I really liked this book. Noémi, a young socialite in Mexico City, receives a concerning letter from her cousin, married to an Englishman in a remote part of Mexico. Noémi travels to the dilapidated manor where her cousin and the Englishman’s family live in the ruins of their wealth from a now closed mine. It doesn’t take long for Noémi to realize something odd is going on. Is the house haunted? Is it driving her cousin mad? Is it driving her mad? Is her cousin being poisoned? And worst of all, will the house let her leave? I very much enjoyed this. It was dark, it was mysterious. Noémi was plucky and smart. It was a treat for anyone who loves a good old Victorian gothic novel.

Read this for book club not knowing what to expect.
There is definitely a great atmosphere to this book. I had dreams specifically about the dread and mystery in this book while reading it. Overall, it's got a decent plot. Is Noemi's cousin insane? Is the house really haunted? Is there more to the story of High Place?
We get all the answers. I personally didn't like the answer to the great mystery but it isn't my book lol. I had two theories as to what it was straight away and one of them was relatively close to the author's chosen path. This is a medium paced book with a SLOW BURN! This book is primarily atmosphere with just a tiny bit of action. The action is ALL at the end. The main character is VERY shallow and not loveable at all but she does want to help her cousin and at least she has a relatable desire to help someone she loves.

I'm beginning to think that horror just isn't for me. This was a great book, but it was just making me stressed, and I *really* don't need more stress in my life.
