I don’t think I’ve ever finished a book over 300 pages so quickly, largely in part because I just wanted it to be done.

I bought this book on a whim and didn’t read anything about it before diving in, which is totally my fault. I thought I’d be entering an adventurous tale of a Mexican heroine, and in a way, I was, but not the sort of adventure I was looking for whatsoever. I’m rather averse to terror, as my anxiety makes up enough spooky stories of its own. The book was very hard to put down — but mostly because I was desperately looking for a shred of hope or relief.

I won’t reveal any spoilers about the book, but I certainly feel this book should come with trigger warnings. I felt deeply uncomfortable at points, and really wish I knew what I would be in for before reading it. I’m not sure if any synopses include these warnings but they should.

I found some of the descriptions of within the book to be repetitive and cynically thought one could create a drinking game whenever “mold” or “serpent” came up.

All in all, for what it was, the writing was both compelling and repulsive. If that’s your schtick, then perhaps you’d like this. However, I won’t be reading anything related to mycelium or Victorian architecture anytime soon.

This was a slow up hill roller coaster of a read. The building up to the main plot twist assisted in an ending that I could not stop reading. Finished this book at 2 am with a look of “holy crap” on my face.

Noemi is fierce, loving, and whip smart. Stunning modern magical realism/horror that tackles colonial violence and violence against women. A beautifully terrifying look at what it takes to fight back set in a decrepit house in the mountains of rural Mexico. Mycology, anthropology, and mystery abound! Heavy on gore, violence, and psychological terror.
