This is probably the weirdest book I read in 2023 (maybe in my life?). That being said, I don't quite know if I liked it or not...

For the first two-thirds of Mexican Gothic, I thought the story would run along the lines of historical fiction and mystery. I enjoyed getting to know Noemí Taboada with her witty personality, High Place and its quirks. Suddenly, magical, poisonous mushrooms
- that grow out of a semi-death person -
came into play, and everything became gradually stranger.

I read this book around Halloween. I appreciated the spooky atmosphere, the patriarch's immortality, and the ancient magic element. Even so, I ended up realising I was still reading it simply because I wanted to know if Noemí, Catalina and Frank would get out alive.

Not bad at all. I guess it's just not my type of book.

I wanted it to be more about sisters but it's kind of a flat hetero love story w a haunted house. Too many gross rape/SA scenes imo

Mexican Gothic has a bit of a tonal issue going on. The first half of the novel is slow, like really slow. The protag Noemi just kind of walks around the house, complains, and has nightmares (she's just like me fr) (and in her defense her complaints are valid). There are spooky scenes in the first half, but I wouldn't have categorized it as horror. The second half takes a bizarre turn and is definitely horror. I think I would have enjoyed the book more had it better combined these elements, particular the first half should have been spookier.

I also wish there was a little more personality to the characters, especially given how much this book relies on their drama. The writing is excellent though and the atmosphere is on point. I also like how this tackled eugenics as a theme and incorporated it into the horror aspects.

This was exactly what I wanted it to be. It's rare that a horror novel actually manages to gross me out, but man oh man did this manage it. It also managed to evoke such visceral anger in me that I had to put the book down and walk it off. The characters were well crafted, the atmosphere was unnerving, and the plot gave me all the gothic vibes I was looking for.
