Possibly my favourite book I’ve read this year.

Absolutely not for the faint of hear. But Karin manages to go into vivid detail on this multilayer crime without it taking away from the plot

I originally gave this book 3 stars but upon further reflection, IT’S GIVING 2. The only reason it’s not getting 1 star is because I did like the twists.

This book is filled with trauma porn. Which, okay some books are just dark like that. But the sheer amount of times the author repeated, in detail, what happened to these women was just too much for me.

I understand how narcissistic people work but Claire only knew Paul for TWO SECONDS when she decided to believe him over her own sister! On top of that, their mom always felt like Paul was shady and yet she also believed Paul and abandoned Dee??!! That makes absolutely no fucking sense. I’m convinced the author forgot she wrote that when she started detailing their parents’ feelings about Paul.

Claire’s redemption arc is nonexistent. She finds out all this shit about Paul, realizes how weak she has always been and how she always lets people do everything for her, actually does the work FOR ONCE, and then goes back to letting herself be weak and lazy again. Girl that’s partially why you were so easily manipulated to begin with. Then she considers dating Fred Nolan. He may not be a murderous psychopath but he is still disgusting. After Paul, she has no interest in doing better for herself.

I won’t even go into how she was constantly teetering on the edge of forgiving Paul.

Paul is a serial rapist? “B-b- but he’s my husband

I don't think I liked this as much as everyone else but it was still decent! Some things just didn't make sense for me. For starters, Claire was conveniently clever when needed but totally useless at other times where the problem was a hell of a lot simpler to solve. The characterization didn't match up half the time. Adding to that, the characters weren't even likeable which doesn't help. I also don't like that a lot of things were pretty obvious to figure out, but the characters would say things that were meant to make the truth impossible, only for it to then be revealed as the truth. I know that's how thrillers are supposed to throw you off track, but it just didn't work for this one. The characters kept mentioning that you can't trust everything you're told or see, but then went ahead and believed some things to be fact instead of questioning what was reveled. I don't know, it just rubbed me the wrong way how answers were revealed in a convenient way or that I'm supposed to believe someone who doesn't know how to upload a YouTube video can figure out everything else.

I received an arc of this book from the publisher and wow! Ican't wait for this book to come out so I can tell everyone that likes thrillers about it. I stayed up late last night ton finish it. I do not summerize plots in my reviews, so I am not going to get into the storyline, but I could not put this book down. I predict great reviews for Karin slaughter and you should move this to the top of your reading list when it comes out
