I cracked up and was entertained. This story though, like Klass's "I Want My Hat Back" or "This Is Not My Hat," has a dry, almost dark humor that just won't fly with some kids. Some will LOVE IT, others will be terrified, that's just how a book like this is going to be received. Proceed with caution and consider your audience. If you decide to go for it, leap in and have fun learning to eat well to get bigger and stronger (and perhaps you can too one day eat a child ;) ).

My favorite Childhood book. 9/10 | ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️½
This was one of those spontaneous purchases that really pays off. I'd never heard of this book when my son picked it out at the book store. It's clever, it's silly and it even gives some useful information (if you don't eat your breakfast, you'll feel weird and if you don't eat well, you won't be big enough to achieve your dreams). The language flows well, making it a pleasure to read aloud, and is definitely not dumbed-down for kids, which is the best way to add to their vocabulary.
The story follows one day in the life of Achilles the crocodile. Instead of his usual diet of bananas, he decides today he'd really like to eat a child. His parents try to convince him to eat other fine things (a sausage as long as a truck and a yummy chocolate cake), but he will not be swayed. When Achilles finally gets his chance to eat a child, things don't go quite as planned. Splunk, Achilles returns home with a new goal. To grow big enough to eat a child (strangely that message hasn't upset my children at all).

Hmm. I love the title. I love the premise. I love the name Achilles for the little crocodile’s name. The illustrations are cute. I really liked it as I was reading it.
However, when I’d finished it, it seemed a bit thin to me; I really wanted more to the story.
I’m also not quite sure about the intended audience for this book. I’d screen it before reading it to 3-4 year olds. I think 5-8 year olds might feel more glee than fear, but it depends on the individual child. The twist at the end is funny for me as an adult but possibly not so reassuring for young children.
I would never have passed on that chocolate cake, I have to say.

Ever since he was three my son keeps laughing about this book. Short, funny with great drawings.
Perhaps a bit insensitive since I'm sure it's possible that it could happen in real life (though hopefully unlikely). Still, a fun story about a picky eater; parents will relate.
Everything you need to know is in the title, and it is glorious.
My little brother got this for me for Christmas and I am so pleased. I can't wait to read it to my 6th grade advisory.
Cute story, simple and straight-forward, a worthy read. The narrative gives plenty to talk about later (being a picky eater but needing to eat what's given you, taking on more than you can handle/ before you're big enough to do it, etc)
