A modest collection of Lorca’s poems and essays on the subject of his hometown, Granada. Each selection is prefaced by a few lines from his correspondence, beautifully descriptive of the countryside and natural world which pervades Granada and its surrounding vega, or hinterland.

The only thing that might have improved this thoughtfully arranged book would have been to have included some of Lorca’s poems in their original Spanish, so as to be able to hear his words and have a sense of his intended rhythm and pacing, the musical sonority of his language. The endnotes are very useful in explaining certain local cultural practices and historical details touched upon.
