Boy, this kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to the end. Do you like a good mystery/thriller, police procedural? This is the book for you.

Many thanks to Netgalley and Random House for this advanced readers copy. This book released in January 2023.

Blaze Me a Sun (Hallandssviten #2)
By Christoffer Carlsson, narrated by Peter Noble

Recently I was able to read the first book in Christoffer Carlsson's Hallandssviten series. I wanted to know more, about Vidar Jorgensson and his father, Sven. Vidar was the focus in the first book, a man who couldn't give up on a police case even long after he resigned from his police job. Vidar seems to have inherited his dad's ability (for better or worse) to focus on the biggest case in his life and not let go, long after it wasn't his case to investigate anymore.

I greatly enjoy Swedish Noir and this story continues the dark, gloomy, foreboding feel. The same night that Prime Minister Palme is killed, policeman Sven Jörgensson answers a phone call with a man saying he's raped a woman and he's "going to do it again". Sven races to the scene of the crime and his efforts to save the woman don't go smoothly. He's obsessed with stopping whoever attacked this woman and then threatens to do it again but the force is understaffed and Palme's death overshadows everything else. It seems that Sven is the only one who isn't forgetting the poor woman.

We are very much in the head of Sven and later in the head of Vidar. The story is slow, introspective, and always with a feeling that the peaceful, happy times are fleeting and far between. Guilt plays a big part in the lives of both men and this book helps me to better understand the Vidar of the first book. I'm glad I could read/hear these books so close together. Peter Noble is fantastic as the narrator, his voice is just right for the mood. I see that I've heard him narrate at least two other stories and will check out more books that he has narrated.
