i had high hopes for this swedish crime thriller, but i felt like the writing style and framework kept the reader at too far of a distance for me to get fully emotionally invested. it also felt overly long and the characters made some dumb choices that never led to any real consequences.

This was a really intriguing Scandinavian crime thriller. It was long, but kept me engaged the entire time. I didn’t ever want to stop listening. Because the story is set in Sweden, across a couple decades, it was difficult for me to keep a few of the names and locations straight. Not knowing how foreign words are spelled can be a challenge with audiobooks. I am a big fan of Jo Nesbø. This book was considerably longer, slower-paced and less violent than many of Nesbø’s, but in Blaze Me a Sun Carlsson beautifully captures the essence of rural Sweden, the relationships that mean the most but are often the hardest, and people’s dogged search for their versions of truth and justice. I hope more of his crime novels are translated into English for me to enjoy.

It was a little hard for me to attach myself to the criminal part of the story, I did follow the story of David and Sven lives. The writer did a good job with the details and explanation of how Sven performed his job duties with his son. I found myself paying a close attention to these moments, because I thought that they had some connection to the plot. The story moved with an easy pace. Some parts of the story was entertaining.

I kept thinking this would get better. A few surprising highlights, but mostly just too long and boring for the story that was told.

Unsolved murders haunt a dedicated cop, then his son, then a writer. A Swedish mystery with satisfying layers.
