This was an amazing read. Dragons, magic, an enterprising heroine who fights the patriarchy, friendship, love and antagonists who are absolutely despicable. The magic system is cool, and Soleia is my favourite character, and her friendship with Kareia is the best part of this book for me. The characterisation, the plot, everything is just so superb. This book is a must read if you're into fantasy.

By the Skies is an adventurous tale of claiming autonomy and becoming more than you ever imagined possible. There's magic and mayhem and dragons and villainy, mixed into an inclusive world full of well-conceived characters and relationships that make you feel like you're a part of the whole story. These are friends of mine, and this is a book about that incredible adventure we had.

Mueller includes some dark elements in this book, like the realities of sexual assault, abuse, and the systems which enable some people to wield power unjustly, so do take heed of the content warnings.
