Mind-numbingly repetitive for an adult, but I can see how this book would be very helpful with a new reader. The repetition is deliberate and focuses on building vocabulary. The words are short and easy, and each little story can be read as a unit.
The family unit is representative of an idealized earlier time - white mom and dad, two blonde girls, brown-haired boy, dog and cat, grandmother and grandfather who live on a farm - but I don't think that would be an issue as long as a child was introduced to other more diverse family units through reading as well.
