Fun, and keeping in tone with the rest of the series. I think I just expected it to have a little more emotional impact, since I'd been with these characters for six books. I'm a big crier, and I shed not a tear during this one.

Following the fate of Tavi and his companions over this series of books has been a long one but a journey I have enjoyed immensely. Jim Butcher has created a fantastic world for his characters to inhabit with some unique enemies to keep them busy. There were times when I thought the journey could have been a bit shorter and the story would not have suffered for it, then the author would throw something into the mix to grab back my interest.
I'm looking forward to exploring more of this author's work.

In my last review I had asked for more, grittiness (?) and wow did Butcher deliver.

There is something mildly alarming of the rate at which Butcher kills Alerans. Somehow, as I read this final installment, the staggering numbers ceased to be impressive and simply became a new detail.

Tavi and co are pushed to the limits of their understanding, and to the brink of complete extinction while retaining that which makes them human and not Vord.

Butcher attempts to define humanity and it is best summed up in Amara's words about the war as: "the preservation of unnecessary beauty." First Lord's Fury represents Alera's last chance faced with being removed from history.

I was pleased with Butcher. He delivered more in this last installment than I had expected. I do think there was missing a degree of sorrow that seemed particularly important to a novel dealing with so much death; nonetheless, its a good ending to a really good series.

More complete review coming later, but I will say that I think this was the best book of the series. Not quite perfect, but well-balanced and -paced, and I think it mostly avoided some of the pitfalls that slightly soured the previous couple of books for me. And a happy – but not sickly sweet – ending to boot. Well done!

Pretty good ending. Finally a solid Pokemon sequence. Not going to be telling people this is a Roman+Pokemon. It's a lot more like the avatar magic system. The animals are barely there.

No. Naming a creature "Garados" doesn't equate to it being Pokemon.
