You can't really put a rating on someone's life or perspective of their life. But you can on the execution. This memoir is littered with literary references, sometimes to a fault, but I enjoyed most of them anyway. However, it also got a bit convoluted due to this. Overall, though, I enjoyed it, and I believe the rating may be higher if I read it a second time in the future.

Fun House is intellectual and vulnerable. The cartoon style really helps show the emotion behind the complex thoughts. I was not familiar with all the literature references so I feel like I missed some points of the book :(

I really, really enjoyed this. She perfectly captures the strangeness of loving family. Borrowing a critique from another reviewer- the heavy literary references were difficult to follow for someone who hasn’t read most of the books. I loved the setting, the genius title, the dark humor… Wow, Bechdel packed so much reflection into this memoir. I’m excited to read Are You My Mother? soon.

Written by the creator of the often misunderstood Bechdel Test, Alison Bechdel, Fun Home is a graphic memoir that explores the life of Bechdel, mainly her complicated relationship to her father. Right after she came out to her parents as a lesbian, she learned her father was queer and then he died.

I had to read this for a college class and was glad I got to study something so gay. It was a sad memoir that I’d recommend to people looking for literature that specifically explores queerness, less-than-ideal-familial relationships, and mental health, all in depth. I found the relationship between Bechdel and her father to be fascinating as he wasn’t a good person, but he struggled with a lot of stuff similar to Alison with mental health and homophobia so they had a unique connection. This leads to a complicated grieving process that this memoir explores. It’s also nice to know who Alison Bechdel is when participating in Bechdel Test discourse (the Bechdel Test is a sapphic test, not a feminist one).

i don’t think i’ve ever read a book that i’ve so closely related to in regards to my sentiments towards my father.
