This is a great memoir on personal identity and overcoming generational trauma told with familiar stories and wonderful illustrations. As someone who loves mythology I have a great appreciation for Bechdel’s ability to meld personal experience with the tragedies of old. Her perspective on Icarus still sits with me years later.

ouch. this one hurts.
really a masterclass in how to make an emotionally poignant comic without coming across as saccharine or over dramatic.
not fully what i expected, for better and worse, and i’m still not 100% into bechdels drawing style though it’s grown on me.

I’m finding more and more that graphic novel memoirs of any kind are fantastic and near always a five star read for me. But I’d really recommend this one! It’s so reflective and literary and freakin epic! Seriously! Give it a shot!

Read this to fulfill a reading challenge prompt and I enjoyed it! The art style was stunning and it was fun to see the similarities and differences between the book and the musical. I think a lot of the literary references throughout went over my head a bit, or I just didn’t filly grasp the depth of their meaning. Overall, it was a very intricately woven, well-structured examination of Bechdel’s life, family, and her father’s role in both.

Let’s just say I’m now a huge Bechdel fan. This book had me invested starting at ~30 pages in and I’m so glad I got the chance to read it. The last page really moved me.
