I really enjoyed the storytelling aspect of this book, but I think it's important to get more context. I'll be reading some more historically accurate accounts from black women's perspectives to flesh out my understanding of the time period. That said, I couldn't put it down.

"Wasn't that the point of the book? For women to realize, We are just two people. Not that much separates us. Not nearly as much as I'd thought.
I'm pretty sure I can say that no one in my family ever asked Demetrie what it felt like to be black in Mississippi, working for our white family. It never occurred to us to ask. It was everyday life. It wasn't something people felt compelled to examine.
I have wished, for many years, that I'd been old enough and thoughtful enough to ask Demetrie that question. She died when I was sixteen. I've spent years imagining what her answer would be. And that is why I wrote this book."
Wow. What a masterpiece. Few books have made me feel this much. I've always loved the movie butas usual the book was so much better. A must read to anyone, loved it loved it loved it

So popular I feel like a review is unnecessary but it's honestly one of the best books I've ever read. An amazing story of bravery and very eye-opening to read about real racism. It is good to recognize social problems so that minds can be opened and said problems hopefully, eventually, solved.
