Disappointing. Some interesting ideas but felt far too simple.

This story took me on a little bit of an emotional rollercoaster.

When I first started reading it and realized it was starring Hadrian front and center I groaned a little inside.  I like Sun Eater, but Hadrian is....a lot.  I cracked this story because I thought I was going to get a break from him, as I did in The Lesser Devil.  I even hoped that maybe the "Queen" in this story was his sister.

So we started off on a bad foot, but then to my surprise, I started to like it.  In fact, by the time we got to the last couple chapters, I was really liking it.  And I was reminded of Howling Dark where one thing I didn't like was how Hadrian and his supporting cast had an entire adventure between books and it put my on weird footing starting that book.  Hopefully this will put me on better footing when I start Demon in White since I think from what I learn here there is going to be another time jump at the beginning of that book.  And that also fills me a little with dread.  I like this Victorian Knight Hadrian.  Why do I have the bad feeling this adventure gives us a taste of that and Demon in White is going to dismantle this status quo in the same way Howling Dark did the status quo going on at the beginning of that book.

But I'm not going to ding this story for my fears for the next main series entry. I enjoyed this, hopefully I will get to see more of this Hadrian.  He's still got the flair for the melodramatic, but isn't quite as dumb in his choices.

Very good novella that continues to fill in pieces of this universe. Useful Appendixes (reminds me of the appendices in LOTR and Dune) if you like that sort of thing :)

Continueing to love Hadrian's POV and the storytelling is fantastic. Looking forward to continueing the series with Demon In White.

A quick novella that fills out Hadrian's path to Sun Eater. A recommended read between the tomes of book 2 and 3.
