Eh, not a super strong novella, in my opinion.
Anytime spent in this grimdark world is a treat, don't get me wrong, but this short, meditative story of one of Hadrian's side-quest is light on the tension and heavy on the melodrama. And I KNOW, Hadrian has obviously claimed he is melodramatic as all hell. But even knowing that about our protag, this was a bit heavy.
The novella delivers an adequately compelling philosophical debate around true and perceived evil. The frame device is ever present, as young Marlowe points the figure at a fellow human for their heartless actions, while old Marlowe admits he would later commit even larger atrocities. All while holding that somehow, he will justify it by the end of the story.
One more novella to go here before picking up Demon in White, which has the heart of many of my favorite BookTubers and BookTokers. Can't wait!
