I've now read two regular novels and two novellas by Ruocchio and I think that I enjoy his novellas more. To me, Ruocchio is a much better writer in a more limited and self-contained story. I thoroughly enjoyed Queen Amid Ashes. This books lacks any huge plot and if you're looking for a traditional story curve I think you'll find it lacking- but what it does I think it excels in. It shows a newly knighted Hadrian arriving to save a planet besieged by the Cielcin and it shows him interacting with his crew (new and existing) and the planet's nobles in that context (ambiguous to avoid spoilers.) Since Ruocchio likes to do a lot of stuff off-screen. It's nice to read a story that very easily could have been relegated to a brief mention in Demon in White. I'm excited to read the next entry in Suneater.

I was planning to do the chronological order of this series and read this before [b:Demon in White|50156751|Demon in White (Sun Eater, #3)|Christopher Ruocchio|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1576102130l/50156751._SX50_SY75_.jpg|71370329], but heard great things about the third book. While Demon in White didn't disappoint, personally not a fan of this book.
I don't because since I'm devouring these books really fast, or because I'm expecting something more out of a novella. Some expansion, aside from Hadrian Marlowe... but this book is once again a Hadrian Marlowe POV. It feels like a deleted chapter from either [b:Howling Dark|41564599|Howling Dark (Sun Eater, #2)|Christopher Ruocchio|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1554659319l/41564599._SY75_.jpg|64859822] or [b:Demon in White|50156751|Demon in White (Sun Eater, #3)|Christopher Ruocchio|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1576102130l/50156751._SX50_SY75_.jpg|71370329]. I was expecting something more similar to [b:The Lesser Devil|53536557|The Lesser Devil (The Sun Eater, #1.5)|Christopher Ruocchio|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1590633476l/53536557._SX50_.jpg|67673025], different POV, different world unconnected to the war with Cielcin.
I skimmed this one about halfway through, then went back to the chapters I skimmed and read it to see if I missed something. This novella still didn't really worked for me.
