4.5: With each book, this series cements itself as one of my all-time favorites. Ruocchio has a rare talent for taking deep, age-old philosophical questions and breaking them down in a way that is both compelling and digestible—especially impressive in a book of this length.

This novella was an excellent addition to the Sun Eater series. Whereas the first Novella (The Lesser Devil) told a part of Crispin's story from the third person, with this book, we return to Hadrian's first person narrative, with a tone and style familiar to readers of the main novels. And for that, I was grateful. The Lesser Devil was fine, but it lacked much of what I like about Sun Eater. Queen Amid Ashes was a much more successful outing from my point of view.
You'll definitely want to have read Howling Dark before picking this up, as there are MAJOR spoilers for that book in this novella. But if you're at all tempted to read this, you probably have consulted a reading guide and already know that.
Looking forward to Demon in White!

I don’t even know what to say, this is just really good. By far the best use of the memoir narration frame in the series so far. It’s unclear if Hadrian is trying to justify his future actions to the reader or to himself, but either way he is desperate to do so but not doing a great job at it, in a way that feels very real
Graphic: Gore, Slavery, Violence, War
Moderate: Genocide
