This has a slow build-up to racing and whiplash ending. In some ways, I wish that the build-up had had a little faster pacing, but I appreciate the way in which the author manages to simultaneously examine a slowly-unraveling marriage while turning the suspense up like a room filling with water.

I was not a fan of the male narrator which narrated majority of the book. It was too slow of a burn for a thriller for me and then about 70% of the way through when the twists started to come, it was almost too many twists for me.

While I have liked Alice Feeney's books in the past, Beautiful Ugly was just not for me. It was really dark and depressing, with weird plot twists and triggers
like a island of man-haters, death of children, parental neglect/near abandonment, and sexual abuse/assault
. Sometimes I can do dark and depressing, especially if there is some sort of redemption or positive characters, but I had a hard time finding any of that in this book. Usually, I can deal with unlikable characters (especially if they are also unreliable narrators which I do loooove) BUT this time, the characters - particularly Grady and Abby - became more and more unlikable as the book went on. I have more compassion for Abby but still. They both got what they deserved, in my opinion... even though the ending really was terrible.

The only good part of this book was that it mostly kept me engaged. I kept waiting to enjoy it and never really did so I really don't think I can recommend it to anyone. Sad day, because I really enjoyed Good Bad Girl and Rock Paper Scissors.
