I usually love Donna Tart but except for the last two chapters this book bored me half to death.
I was hoping for a somewhat conclusive ending but so many questions were left unanswered, like who killed Robin, who gave that girl the gloves and what they were doing with the snakes in the first place. also all of the characters annoyed me more and more throughout the book, though I guess that's somewhat the point.
sorry but this one wasn't my cup of tea at all.

This was a gritty coming of age story clouded in grief and mystery. It provided an in depth look at privilege and racism in the 1960’s.  Harriet was an interesting, unique character who, despite never knowing him, was desperate to solve her brother's murder.  This is shown several times through the book in different ways.  It shows that grief doesn’t come only from death, but growing up in the shadow of someone else.

Someone needs to tell Tartt that pretention does not equal well-written. I don't think I've ever read anyone who blathers on as much as this lady does without actually saying anything (with maybe the exception of Franzen). I'll pay her her dues for The Secret History, but that's apparently where my enjoyment for Tartt novels both begins and ends.
