I think a lot of people giving this book a bad review got into the book expecting a fast paced mystery or something like The Secret History. 

That’s not what this book is trying to do. This book explores grief, class, and race through the lens of a 12-year old child in the American South. It’s not an action mystery full of plot, but it is a beautifully written book with some of the most real and nuanced characters I’ve ever read
