I genuinely don’t know how to rate this book? Here’s the thing. The age gap between the two protagonists is WILD. I don’t see what the purpose is of having such a large age gap in this story. It’s off-putting and hard to ignore for 75% of this book. The other 25% of their relationship was so enjoyable. And I’m torn because if you are going to do an age gap like this, Wolfsong is the way to do it. But I still just think it was an overall poor choice. I mentally changed Ox’s age to being only a few years older than Joe because it was freaking me out too much.

Then the idea of the werewolves was also a lot. It’s very similar to a/b/o fanfics, but it’s actually written pretty well? There were some pretty hard to read moments (especially in the repetition of his father’s words) but overall this was an enjoyable read for me.

I haven’t had this much fun reading a book in a while, and that’s why I’m being so blunt here when it comes to my issues with this story. Was this book a great time? Yes. Will this be the most engaging book I will read this year? Probably. Would I ever recommend it? No. And not because of the werewolf dynamic, but because the age gap with the main pair is just not something I could see other people looking past. If the two had been three years apart that would have been fine. Freshman/Senior relationships in high school aren’t uncommon. But 6 years?! And they met when he was 10?! That’s a big ick, and honestly thinking about it too hard makes me want to rate the book lower. And I am going to put a trigger warning that this is an adult/minor relationship because bro was 23 falling in love with a 17 year old. Let’s call it what it is.

Oh man.

This book is SO well written and I love everything else by Klune. The first several chapters I thought it was shaping up to be an all-time favorite. But I didn't realize it would be the kind of werewolf stuff in the category of "oh I imprinted on you when I was 10 and you were 16" and actually turn into a relationship while the younger of the two was still a minor (I think it was heading relationship at least; the start of them confessing attraction to one another at 23/17 was when I DNF'd).

I feel about this like I felt about the movie Licorice Pizza, which is that it's probably a work of art, a top best-crafted piece, and by a creator I really adore, but wtf is going on with the age gap, no thank you.

Not writing off Klune because I love his other stuff so much and I think he wrote this one awhile ago but feeling v relieved to DNF despite the quality of the writing.

Also, no judgment if you enjoyed this, I see why based on the narrative quality and it's no worse than like, Jacob imprinting on a baby in Twilight, I guess; this is just a personal and visceral boundary that was a hard no for me.

It’s like if Twilight was about Gay werewolves

I thought I could push through the Orta of the story that were cringey but I don’t care enough about the plot.

Somehow…I finished this book.

Two things that made it almost end up in the DNF pile:

The age difference between the main love interests, and the fact that one of them is underage when they meet - and it truly didn’t seem necessary. Like. They could have been closer in age and older.

All of this talk about “pack” and how “pack is family, pack comes first” - just makes me laugh and think of Dominic Toretto in the Fast and Furious movies.

Basically, this book is Twilight meets Fast and Furious, with a creepy and unnecessary underage/age gap between the two main love interests.
