I was so disappointed by this book since I love under the whispering door and house in the cerulean sea so much. The writing, especially the dialogue, made me almost DNF this so many times.
“Blah. Blah” I said.
“Blah blah” he said.
“Blah. Blah” I said.
“Blah blah” he said
“Blah. Blah” I said.
“Blah blah” he said.
Did TJ Klune forget there are words other that said to describe dialogue? There were hardly any descriptors in this book at all. Also the word ‘and’ must have been used 8000 times.
“It was cold. And. It was wet. And. It was rainy. And. There were no lights. And. The wind was blowing. And….”
Such awful writing in honesty in shock. Maybe the audio book made this seem worse?
I was also really shocked how vulgar this book was. There was a very explicit sex scene and some pretty extreme lusting over a teenager. Again, I love Under the whispering door and the house in the cerulean sea and neither of them had sex scenes that I can recall. I will not be reading any more of this series, and probably not any more TJ Klune either.

I certainly enjoyed parts of this book more than others. It feels very indulgent in ways I didn’t mind, but some people may find it cringey. Deeply heartfelt and angsty, while also a little repetitive at times. It does feel like the repetition is a choice based on the narration style, but repetitive nonetheless. The book could have been shorter based on the simplicity of the plot, but there were many good character interactions that bulked it out, and I enjoyed seeing how all the characters’ intimacy unfolded in that way. Character conversations and narrator introspection is the focus, rather than external worldbuilding.

I am familiar with Klune’s other works, and this absolutely feels like something he wrote prior to finding his author’s voice and style. But honestly, I came here for indulgent, angsty, queer werewolves and I was definitely not disappointed.

Wow this book was uncomfortable. I shouldn’t be surprised given the author’s other works, but I guess it’s good to be aware he’s creepy on multiple levels. Why did this start when they were children? Why is there such an age gap between the couple? Why was this book so long? Why was repetition used so frequently?
The most disturbing thing about this book is the ages of Ox and Joe. They’re six years apart, and Joe is ten when they meet and he realises Ox is his mate. What the fuck. Why? There is literally no reason why they couldn’t have been closer in age. Also no reason why they couldn’t have met in high school and then very quickly moved forward in time (also would have solved the problem of this being excessively long).
Richard Collins torturing and abusing Joe seemed like an unnecessary and gratuitous plot line. It seemed like the only reason that happened was to show why Ox and Joe were mates: Joe didn’t talk until he met Ox, and years later he’s scared Collins will hurt Ox so he leaves him behind. In both of these instances, we get other reasons for Joe’s actions so it seems over the top (and poorly handled) to also attribute them to horrific abuse.
I know people love the found family aspect of this book, but this also creeped me out. All of the relationships seemed borderline sexual and once again, a large portion of this found family are minors for a significant chunk of the book. Also, I get that it’s not exactly a surprise that the Bennetts are werewolves, but they are so doggy. Is that really attractive? I’m aware I’m not really a dog person, but I think Klune might be a bit too into his pets.

The one thing I did enjoy about this reading experience was the audiobook narrator seemed to dislike this book as much as I did and did some things that really emphasised the annoying parts of this book. I appreciated what I’m interpreting as his sneaky resistance.

I enjoyed the writing style and overall story but it would have been nice if Joe was a couple years older in the beginning. Him being a 10-year old is a harder pill to swallow later on.
