I had been seeing this book everywhere and I probably should have checked the trigger warnings. I highly recommend you do and I wish more people when advertising books did that.

The extremely graphic triggering part of the book doesn’t come in till like a third of the way through.

I liked the switching perspectives especially in the beginning. The chapters were short and there was a nice pace to the book. Toward the middle and end the chapters were long we and started to feel slow. The book was a bit predictable toward the end.

I did like the author’s writing style (although sometimes the dialogue got a bit cheesy) and would consider reading her future works.

What really irked me and took me out of the story is at the end Kate’s abusive ex-husband finds her and instead of immediately calling the police or her friend (which she later admits she should have done) she concocts this more complicated plan to hide in the attic.  I just didn’t understand why she didn’t ask for help earlier in that crisis.  Also I’m not sure why she came down from the attic, I would have phoned for help as the animals were attack Simon. I don’t intend to victim/survivor blame but rather point out that as a reader it took me out of the story because I was thinking “what are you doing?”

So thankful that this was a BOTM pick because I don’t know if I would have found it on my own. I can’t even go into details - one of those books that leaves you with a warm, satisfied feeling and the dread of a good book hangover. I don’t usually like books that bounce around different characters at different times because I think it’s an over-used format, but I loved it in this book. Kept me on the edge of my seat. The author has a similar book about Sirens coming out in 2025 - can’t wait! Though I hope it’s not too similar.
LOTS of big trigger warnings.

To be honest, I really enjoyed this to start with. But this had a lot of topics that are triggering for me, and I hadn’t expected some of it so it really didn’t land well and the book is just not one that I can continue with.

This was tragic and brutal and beautiful all at the same time. Be sure to check your trigger warnings.
The bit at the end between Adam and Altha felt really bizarre. Like I understand she was supposed to be queer coded and like didn’t actually want him but he really and genuinely seemed to care about her and she kindof used that care in a way that was only for her own gain. And I get that it was to continue her family line but I’m not quite sure I see that as different from men that have sex with women until they get a male heir. Like something about it just didn’t sit right and then we NEVER ADDRESS IT. I just wanna know what happens to Adam.

An interesting narrative of three women across generations.  If you like the stories where women triumph over the cruelty of men, then you will love this one.  Check the content warnings.  It had lovely prose and sympathetic main characters.
