This was fine, honestly very average overall, but a quick read. I thought the writing was good, especially for a debut novel, and I liked how it wove together the three women’s stories even if it was a bit predictable at times. It was definitely super light on the magical realism/witchy aspects, I kind of wanted more from that. As someone who is not a fan of pregnancy in books, this just had a bit too much of it for me to ever enjoy my time with it, and some of the descriptions really got under my skin. It also just started to feel a little overwhelming with the amount of trauma these women went through, like it literally just kept getting progressively worse as the book went on, and all the women in this story went through an absurd amount of trauma and the men depicted were the actual worst examples on the planet. It’s a pet peeve of mine when I feel like authors use trauma as the ONLY plot device and only way to develop their characters (it happens with women and people of color all the time) and I just think there are much better stories to tell and women are so much more than their trauma.

I loved this bewitching tale.  It's about three women from three different periods of history, each of them strong and resilient, refusing to see themselves as victims.  They are connected by blood, by the similar traumas they experience and by the magical gift they each possess, allowing them to connect deeply with nature and use its power to change things for the better. The atmosphere is spooky and mysterious and the language is beautiful, with many vivid descriptions of the natural world.

The narrative shifts between the three different time periods so each woman's voice is heard and her story is told.  As the novel progresses, we learn more about the links between the women and the stories come together.  First, there is Kate, whose story takes place in the modern day.  Pregnant and afraid, she escapes from her abusive partner and begins a new life in Cumbria in the cottage left to her by her great aunt.  Violet's story takes place in the 1940s.  She is a teenager, living with her brother and her cold and controlling father, at Orton Hall.  She loves nature and dreams of becoming an entomologist, but her father is determined that she will conform to society's expectations, with no regard for her happiness.  Then there is Altha, a healer like her mother before her, on trial for witchcraft in the 17th century after the death of a local man in suspicious circumstances.

I have always been interested in historical witch trials and I particularly enjoyed Altha's storyline. I was fascinated by the references to herbal medicine, giving me an insight into the ways these wise woman went about their work.   It isn't always an easy read with references to misogyny and physical/sexual abuse, but it sends out an empowering message too, these brave women, doing everything they can to survive in an oppressive patriarchal society.

The perfect Halloween read.
