This was an amazing read.

While not strictly an autobiography, Claybourne used his access to King's public and private writings to compile a biography as if King actually wrote all of it. Any parts that were direct quotations from King were italicized. Throughout the entire book I was impressed by how consistent the writing style and narrative/expression of beliefs were. If they had not been marked I would not have known what were actually King's direct words and what were carefully written imitations of his beliefs and actions.

This was an enlightening read for me. Not only did I leave with a better grasp of King as a historical figure. I also better understand the Civil Rights movement, the competing ideologies King faced, and his own philosophy of non-violent resistance. Also, reading this in light of the events occurring now in 2020 I feel better equipped to grapple with the conversations that need to be had.

I find that I greatly admire King and his ideals and ethics. I hope to imitate him in my life, as I find him an admirable person.

Excellent book. I read another book on MLK Jr that I loved which talked about how he was a great leader, but this one was better. His thoughts are fascinating and his insights are very well explained and thought out. I love how he is such an advocate for good positive change. It makes his assassination ten times worse.

This is especially good to read for our times. It makes you reflect on what is happening now.

The audiobook format is amazing. The recordings of Dr. King's speeches and sermons were very powerful.

Brilliant book. Brilliant man. So interesting to read about him now, to read his powerful words which are still incredibly relevant today. Well worth a read.

Editor and MLK scholar, Clayborne Carson, cobbled together writings and speeches to create this powerful rendering of Dr. King’s work. The audiobook production is chill-inducing. LeVar Burton narrates the stories which are punctuated by actual speech and sermon recordings. Such an incredible human being.

I usually don't like any over-produced or dramatised audiobooks but the interspersion of King's actual speeches and excerpts from civil rights music throughout worked really well. Excellent

I enjoyed this book a lot, and finished just in time for MLK! It wasn't a true autobiography, but rather a collection of his writings and speeches compiled together. The audiobook was great, in spite of some technical issues. Levar Burton read the book and they used a lot of audio recordings from Martin Luther King's speeches and sermons which was excellent and really brought the book to life.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I haven't spent much time learning about Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. before, but I can tell you he is an inspiring man and hero and it was fascinating to read about him from his own words. I HIGHLY recommend listening to this as an audiobook! Levar Burton does a fantastic job narrating and you get to hear actual audio from speeches (some famous, some lesser known) delivered by MLK himself.
